How to Enable OTP Verification on Your Account?

Overview

OTP (One-Time Password) verification confirms that a mobile number belongs to the person submitting or updating it. This article explains how to enable and configure OTP verification across the three areas where it applies — Lead Profile, Applicant Profile and Registration Form, and Widgets.

Plan & Permissions

Available on all plans and packages. Requires access to Settings.

Before You Begin

OTP delivery requires at least one active SMS or WhatsApp channel on your account.

ChannelWhat is needed
SMSSMS settings configured under Communication > SMS
WhatsAppWhatsApp configured and active on your account with sufficient credit balance

If neither channel is configured, the OTP button will not appear to the student or applicant regardless of the settings enabled below.

1. Lead Profile — Lead Verification Settings

Use this to enable OTP verification when an admissions team member verifies a lead's mobile number from the CRM lead record.

Where to find it: Lead Manager > Settings > Lead Verification Settings

Turn on the Enable OTP verification toggle to reveal the configuration options below.

What to configure

SettingWhat it does
SMSEnables SMS as the OTP delivery channel for lead verification.
WhatsAppEnables WhatsApp as the OTP delivery channel for lead verification.
No of digits in OTPSet the OTP length — select between 4 and 8 digits.
Bypass OTP for international numbersWhen ON, OTP verification is skipped for mobile numbers with international dialling codes.
Send OTP from NPFORM Sender IDWhen ON, OTP SMS is sent using Meritto's NPFORM sender ID.

How it works once configured

  • If at least one channel (SMS or WhatsApp) is checked, the Send OTP / Verify button sends OTP to the mobile number field on the lead record.
  • If both channels are checked, SMS is attempted first. If SMS does not reach the lead, WhatsApp is used as a fallback.
  • If neither channel is checked, the button does not appear.

Note: This screen also includes a Disable OTP Verification for the user toggle. This allows a counsellor to bypass OTP when manually updating a lead's mobile number — it is a counsellor-level action and is separate from the OTP configuration settings above.

2. Applicant Profile and Registration Form — Applicant and Registration Verification Settings

Use this to enable OTP verification on the applicant's dashboard, form slugs, NIAA, MIO registrations and registration forms. They must verify before the number is marked confirmed.

Where to find it: Application Settings > Login/Verification Settings > Applicant and Registration Verification Settings

Turn on the Send OTP for Applicant Verification toggle to reveal the configuration options below.

What to configure

SettingWhat it does
SMSEnables SMS as the OTP delivery channel for applicant verification.
WhatsAppEnables WhatsApp as the OTP delivery channel for applicant verification.
Number of Digits in OTPSet the OTP length — select between 4 and 8 digits.
Bypass OTP for international numbersWhen ON, OTP verification is skipped for mobile numbers with international dialling codes.
Send OTP from NPFORM Sender IDWhen ON, OTP SMS is sent using Meritto's NPFORM sender ID.
Enable OTP Verification on Form SlugWhen the main toggle is ON, this sub-setting is also enabled by default with all forms selected. Use the dropdown to restrict OTP to specific registration forms only.

How it works once configured

On My Profile (SAP Applicant Dashboard)

  • If at least one channel is active, the Verify Number button appears next to the mobile number field on the applicant's profile page.
  • If both channels are active, SMS is attempted first with WhatsApp as fallback.
  • If neither channel is active, the button does not appear and the applicant cannot verify.

On Registration Forms

  • OTP verification is applied to the forms selected under the Form Slug setting.
  • The OTP step appears inline on the form. The form cannot be submitted until the mobile number is verified.

Note: This setting also governs OTP in the Change Password and Forgot Password flows for applicants. No separate configuration is required for those flows.

3. Widget — Widget Configuration

Use this to enable OTP verification on individual widgets (enquiry forms embedded on your website). Each widget is configured independently.

Where to find it: Widgets > Select a Widget > Configuration

Check the Enable OTP box to reveal the channel options below.

What to configure

SettingWhat it does
SMSEnables SMS as the OTP delivery channel for this widget.
WhatsAppEnables WhatsApp as the OTP delivery channel for this widget.
Number of Digits in OTPSet the OTP length — select between 4 and 8 digits.
Bypass OTP for international numbersWhen ON, OTP verification is skipped for international mobile numbers on this widget.
Send OTP from NPFORM Sender IDWhen ON, OTP SMS uses Meritto's NPFORM sender ID for this widget.

Each widget must be configured individually. Enabling OTP on one widget does not affect other widgets on your account.

Points to Keep in Mind

RuleDetail
Code lengthConfigurable — 4 to 8 digits as set per configuration area.
Credit exhaustionIf your SMS or WhatsApp credit balance is exhausted, OTP delivery stops.
Widget independenceWidget OTP configuration is fully independent. It does not read from or affect Lead Verification Settings or Applicant and Registration Verification Settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Verify button is not appearing on the applicant's profile.
Check that at least one channel (SMS or WhatsApp) is enabled under Applicant and Registration Verification Settings.

I want OTP on the registration form but not on My Profile.
This is not configurable separately — Applicant and Registration Verification Settings applies to both. Use the Form Slug sub-setting to control which forms have OTP, but note that if any channel is active, the Verify button will also appear on My Profile.

Can I set a different OTP length for leads vs. applicants vs. widgets?
Yes. Each configuration area has its own digit count setting and they are fully independent.

Does enabling OTP on a widget also enable it on the registration form?
No. Widget OTP is fully independent. It does not read from or affect Applicant and Registration Verification Settings.
