Understanding and Managing your Suppressions List - Email

Overview

Managing your Suppressions List is essential for maintaining healthy email deliverability and domain reputation. When emails fail to reach recipients due to issues such as spam complaints, bounces, or unsubscribes, they get added to the suppressions list. Understanding how to handle suppressed emails ensures that your marketing and transactional emails reach the right audience effectively.

Plan & Permissions

  • Access to Marketing Module along with permission to manage suppressions : Required to view and manage suppressed email IDs.

  • Administrator Access: Admin can be given the manage suppressions permission needed to verify and remove suppressed email IDs.

Core Functionalities

Unsubscribe vs. Suppressions

  • Unsubscribe: When a recipient opts out of receiving emails by clicking the unsubscribe link, they are removed from future email communications.

  • Suppressions: Emails are suppressed to maintain domain reputation. Suppressions occur due to factors like intended recipient may have unsubscribed previously, spam complaints, hard bounces, and blocked sender domains.

Types of Suppressions

  1. Block: The recipient’s email server rejects the message due to issues related to the message content or sending IP. Blocks are not always permanent.

  2. Bounce: The email is rejected and returned to the sender due to an invalid or unreachable recipient address.

    • Soft Bounce: Temporary issues like a full inbox or server timeout.

    • Hard Bounce: Permanent issues such as an invalid or non-existent email address.

  3. Invalid: The recipient’s email address does not exist on the mail server.

  4. Spam Complaint: The recipient marks your email as spam, automatically adding the email to the suppressions list.

  5. Unsubscribe: When a recipient opts out of all future email communications.

Once an email ID is added to the suppressions list, future emails to that address will not be delivered unless it is manually removed.

NotesNote: If using Pepipost (Netcore) as the vendor, we might not have access to the suppressions list. We need to check this in the admin panel or request access from the institute.
